Webs We Weave
You guys....the web is where it's at. Not only is GIRL PARTS already in a festival before we've officially launched online, now comes the latest news that All My Children and One Life to Live are going to continue...online. I'll be interested to see how that works out for the actors as far as their contracts and payment. And how it will effect the legitimacy of online content. Will more viewers realize that original online content is worth tuning into? Will there be more sites like Blip and Hulu to accomodate all the content? What kind of content will resonate with viewers? And will more people buy internet capable televisions so they can catch their favorite online series on bigger screens? It really is like a brand new world out here. The usual avenues for being a working actor are getting narrower on networks, since pilot season has shrunk and "name" actors are the end all be all - even for guest spots. It's kind of exciting to be a part of the revolution. Exciting and nervewracking.

I just can't see all the grandma's (or grandpa's) out there navigating the internet to catch their stories. "Al Gore created what? The interenet? What's that sonny?" (said in a grandma voice)
ReplyDeleteRight, but that's assuming that the only audience soaps have is the more elderly crowd. There are plenty of people in a more tech-savvy demographic that might be interested in following their soap wherever it goes. I mean, I know plenty of people in the generation above me and the one above them that are on Facebook, so they are not completely internet illiterate. And if so, that could be very interesting for the rest of the internet world. Remember, soaps were originally on radio and went to TV. Now, they are making the jump to what could conceivably be the next profitable medium. No one has really figured out how to make online creative property profitable yet. But....that doesn't mean that someone won't figure it out soon. And maybe if people are willing to subscribe online then things can grow for all of us - independent producers, actors, etc. I mean, I know we pay a ridiculous amount for our cable. And we don't even get premium channels. Who's to say that won't shift to online? Things might be evolving to the move online....we'll see....
